Aberdeen sits about 145 miles northeast of Glasgow. Most of our patients from the city make the journey in just under two and a half hours on the A90 south through Dundee and Perth, then onto the motorway network into the city centre. It is a straightforward drive, and for a procedure that has a significant and lasting effect, patients consistently tell us it is well worth it.

Aberdeen does not have a specialist hair transplant clinic offering the same level of surgical expertise. That is why men from the Granite City and the wider Aberdeenshire region travel to us in Glasgow.

Hair Transplant in Glasgow for Aberdeen Patients

Hair loss is common among men in their twenties and thirties. The genetic predisposition that drives androgenetic alopecia, the clinical term for male pattern baldness, does not distinguish by geography. The same patterns of recession appear in Aberdeen as they do anywhere else. What is different is the availability of specialist surgical options close to home.

We carry out FUE hair transplant, DHI hair transplant, and FUT hair transplant, along with beard transplants and eyebrow transplants. Our procedures are carried out by GMC-registered surgeons. Not technicians performing the work while a doctor signs off. The surgeon does the surgery.

Aberdeen patients typically come down the day before their procedure or travel early on the morning of the appointment. Glasgow city centre has a wide choice of accommodation and the clinic at 69 Buchanan Street is close to everything. Several patients from Aberdeenshire find it easier to combine the trip with a short stay in the city rather than driving back the same day, particularly given the advice to rest for the first 24 hours after the procedure.

Why Aberdeen Patients Choose to Travel for This

The decision to travel for a hair transplant comes down to what is available locally versus what the procedure actually requires. Hair transplant surgery is not a straightforward cosmetic treatment. The result you get depends almost entirely on the skill of the person doing the extraction and implantation, the design of the hairline, and the planning of graft distribution. Getting that wrong is difficult and expensive to correct.

Aberdeen patients who have researched the field tend to reach the same conclusion. The quality of the result justifies the distance. We offer free consultations so that patients can make the journey once, meet the team, discuss their case in detail, and decide whether to proceed before committing to anything.

A consultation covers the extent of loss, what is realistic to achieve, how many grafts are likely to be needed, which technique is appropriate, and what the recovery involves. For anyone travelling from Aberdeen, we can also arrange the consultation and the procedure on consecutive days if that is more practical.

Hair Transplant Procedures Available to Aberdeen Patients

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

The most widely chosen technique. Individual follicles are extracted from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp using a precision punch tool, then implanted into the recipient area. No linear scar. The donor area heals with small dot marks that are not visible at normal hair lengths. Most of our Aberdeen patients opt for FUE given the recovery profile and the flexibility it offers on hairstyle after healing. Our FUE page goes into the full detail on how the procedure works.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

A variant of FUE in which a specialised implanter tool is used to place grafts directly without pre-making channels in the recipient area. The difference is in the implantation stage rather than the extraction. DHI can offer slightly higher density in some cases and is often preferred for patients adding density to an existing hair area rather than addressing a fully bald zone. See the comparison in our FUE vs DHI guide.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant)

A strip of donor tissue is removed from the back of the scalp, dissected under magnification, and the individual follicular units are implanted. FUT leaves a linear scar at the donor site, which is covered by hair grown to a moderate length. It is the preferred technique for patients who do not want to shave the donor area, including many women and some transgender patients. Our FUT page covers who it suits and what to expect.

Beard and Eyebrow Transplants

We also carry out beard transplants for men who cannot grow a full beard due to patchy growth or scarring, and eyebrow transplants for men and women who have lost brow density through over-plucking, alopecia, or other causes. Both use FUE technique and follow the same recovery pattern as scalp transplants.

How Many Grafts Will I Need?

This is the most common question at consultation and the answer varies considerably depending on the extent of loss, the target density, and the available donor supply. A hairline restoration addressing early recession typically requires 1,500 to 2,500 grafts. A more extensive procedure covering mid-scalp and crown areas can require 3,000 or more. Our guide to graft counts covers the ranges by area and pattern in detail.

Pricing is based on the number of grafts. Full pricing for each graft band is on our hair transplant cost page.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most patients the answer is yes. Hair transplant results depend almost entirely on the surgical skill, hairline design, and graft planning involved. Aberdeen does not have a specialist clinic offering the same level of surgeon-led expertise. Patients from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire regularly travel to our Glasgow clinic and the journey, at around two and a half hours by car or train, is straightforward.

Yes. For patients travelling from Aberdeen we can arrange the free consultation and the procedure on consecutive days if that is more practical. The consultation takes around an hour and covers your hair loss pattern, the options available, graft requirements, and expected outcome. Many patients from out of town find this approach more convenient than two separate trips.

By car, take the A90 south through Dundee and join the motorway network via Perth, then follow the M80 and M8 into Glasgow city centre. The clinic is on Buchanan Street, approximately 145 miles from Aberdeen and around two and a half hours without significant traffic. By train, direct ScotRail services from Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street take around two and a half to three hours, and the station is a five-minute walk from the clinic.

We advise patients to rest for 24 hours after the procedure. Most patients travelling from Aberdeen either stay overnight in Glasgow and return the following day, or arrange for someone to drive them home. Travelling by train the following morning is fine. The recipient area will be tender and there will be some redness, but you are not restricted to bed rest and can travel comfortably.

FUE is the most commonly chosen technique and is appropriate for the majority of patients. It leaves no linear scar and suits patients who keep their hair short. FUT is preferred when the patient does not want to shave the donor area or requires the maximum possible graft yield from a single session. DHI is a variant of FUE that suits patients looking to add density to an existing hair area. The right choice depends on your individual case, which is what the free consultation is for.

There are no additional costs for patients travelling from Aberdeen. Pricing is based on the number of grafts required and is the same for all patients regardless of where they are coming from. A typical hairline procedure of 1,500 to 2,500 grafts sits in a range covered on our cost page. The free consultation will give you a clear graft estimate and a precise price.

I Had a hair transplant 10 days ago at HTG’s Edinburgh clinic and everything so far has been great. I had 1750 FUE grafts done which took approx. 7/8 hours and was carried out by Dr Kalra and his team who were very professional and did a brilliant job. There is zero pain after having this procedure and I’m looking forward to the next 12 months of strong growth! Kevin and Dr Kalra have both been excellent in providing support and answering any questions I have both before and after my procedure.

Kevin HTG, kept me informed of proceedings throughout the whole process leading up to my appointment and was very helpful in answering any questions I had. The transplant itself went very well, with Dr Kalra and his team talking me through the whole procedure as it progressed, and reassuring me if I had any concerns. Kevin, HTG plus Dr Kalra and his team were very professional throughout the whole process from the first phone call to completing the transplant.

One week on from having a FUE hair transplant, and I'm already delighted with how it is looking. My donor area is healing over nicely and my grafts are settling. Kevin promptly answered my initial inquiry and got me booked in for a day which suited me at the Edinburgh clinic. Dr Kalra wax my surgeon and within minutes of having met him, his experience and expertise was clear to see. The technicians and staff at the clinic were also very friendly and skilled. The only slight improvement I would have is that it would be good if patients were able to speak to their surgeon before their transplant day. I'd recommend HTG to anyone in central Scotland looking to have an FUE procedure done.
