Dundee is around 85 miles northeast of Glasgow. On the M90 south through Perth and onto the M9 and M80, the drive takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. There is also a direct ScotRail service from Dundee station to Glasgow Queen Street that runs in under an hour and a half. For a procedure that will have a lasting effect on how you look and how you feel, the journey is a practical one for most Dundee patients.

Hair transplant surgery requires a level of surgical expertise and experience that is not widely available outside of specialist clinics. Dundee does not have that option locally. That is why patients from the city and from Angus, Perthshire, and Fife regularly travel to our Glasgow clinic.

Hair Transplant in Glasgow for Dundee Patients

Hair loss affects a significant proportion of men before they reach their thirties. The pattern is familiar: a gradually receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or a combination of both. The condition is genetic in most cases and it does not respond to shampoos, serums, or topical treatments in any meaningful way at the advanced stages. For men who want to address it permanently, a hair transplant is the only option that actually works.

At our Glasgow clinic, our GMC-registered surgeons carry out all procedures directly. We offer FUE hair transplant, DHI hair transplant, and FUT hair transplant, along with beard transplants and eyebrow transplants. Dundee patients come to us because the standard of surgical care is not something they can access closer to home, and the drive or train journey makes it entirely achievable in a single day.

Why Dundee Patients Travel to Our Glasgow Clinic

The decision to travel for a hair transplant usually comes after research. Once patients understand the difference between a surgeon-led procedure and one carried out primarily by technicians, the reasoning becomes clear. The result of a hair transplant reflects the skill of the person doing the extraction and the implantation, and the quality of the hairline design. Getting those things right requires experience that takes years to develop.

We offer a free consultation at the Glasgow clinic. Dundee patients can come in, meet the surgical team, discuss their case, and understand exactly what is achievable before committing to anything. A consultation covers the extent of loss, which technique is appropriate, a realistic graft estimate, and what recovery involves. Many patients find they want to go ahead after that conversation once they have a clear picture of what to expect.

For Dundee patients, the option to combine the consultation and the procedure into a single trip is available if that is more convenient. We can arrange back-to-back appointments to minimise the number of visits required.

Procedures Available to Dundee Patients

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

The most widely used hair transplant technique. Individual follicular units are extracted from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp using a fine punch tool, then implanted into the recipient area. FUE leaves no linear scar and suits patients who keep their hair at short to medium lengths. The recovery is straightforward and most patients are presentable within ten to fourteen days. Full detail is on our FUE page.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

DHI uses a specialised implanter pen to place extracted grafts directly into the recipient area without first creating channels in the scalp. The implantation stage differs from standard FUE but the extraction is the same. DHI is often selected for patients who want to add density to an area where existing hair is still present. Our FUE vs DHI comparison covers the differences in practical terms.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant)

FUT involves removing a strip of donor skin from the back of the scalp, dissecting it into individual follicular units under magnification, and implanting those units into the thinning areas. It leaves a linear scar in the donor region, which is not visible at moderate hair lengths. FUT is preferred by patients who do not want to shave the donor area, and it can yield a higher graft count from a single session than FUE in some cases. Our FUT page explains who it suits and what the recovery involves.

Beard and Eyebrow Transplants

We carry out beard transplants for men with patchy or uneven beard growth, and eyebrow transplants for men and women who have lost density due to over-plucking, alopecia, or scarring. Both use FUE technique and follow a similar recovery timeline to scalp procedures.

How Many Grafts Will I Need?

Graft requirements depend on the extent of hair loss, the area being treated, and the density the patient wants to achieve. A hairline procedure for early to mid-stage recession typically requires between 1,500 and 2,500 grafts. Addressing the crown or mid-scalp in addition to the hairline can bring that figure to 3,000 or more. Our graft count guide sets out the typical ranges by hair loss pattern and area.

Pricing is determined by the number of grafts and is the same for all patients. The full breakdown is on our hair transplant cost page.

FUE extracts individual follicles using a small punch tool and leaves no linear scar in the donor area. It is the most common choice and suits patients who prefer shorter hairstyles after recovery. FUT removes a strip of donor skin, which leaves a linear scar that is covered by hair at a moderate length. FUT is preferred when the patient does not want to shave the donor area or when a higher graft yield is needed from a single session. The right choice depends on your case, which the free consultation will determine.

I Had a hair transplant 10 days ago at HTG’s Edinburgh clinic and everything so far has been great. I had 1750 FUE grafts done which took approx. 7/8 hours and was carried out by Dr Kalra and his team who were very professional and did a brilliant job. There is zero pain after having this procedure and I’m looking forward to the next 12 months of strong growth! Kevin and Dr Kalra have both been excellent in providing support and answering any questions I have both before and after my procedure.

Kevin HTG, kept me informed of proceedings throughout the whole process leading up to my appointment and was very helpful in answering any questions I had. The transplant itself went very well, with Dr Kalra and his team talking me through the whole procedure as it progressed, and reassuring me if I had any concerns. Kevin, HTG plus Dr Kalra and his team were very professional throughout the whole process from the first phone call to completing the transplant.

One week on from having a FUE hair transplant, and I'm already delighted with how it is looking. My donor area is healing over nicely and my grafts are settling. Kevin promptly answered my initial inquiry and got me booked in for a day which suited me at the Edinburgh clinic. Dr Kalra wax my surgeon and within minutes of having met him, his experience and expertise was clear to see. The technicians and staff at the clinic were also very friendly and skilled. The only slight improvement I would have is that it would be good if patients were able to speak to their surgeon before their transplant day. I'd recommend HTG to anyone in central Scotland looking to have an FUE procedure done.
