Edinburgh and Glasgow are fifty miles apart. On the M8 the journey takes around an hour, often less outside of commuter hours. For most Edinburgh patients that makes us the closest specialist hair transplant clinic offering surgeon-led procedures, and it is a straightforward trip by car or train.

We see a significant number of patients from Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, and the Borders. The corridor between the two cities is well served and the journey is not the consideration it might be for patients coming from further north.

Hair Transplant in Glasgow for Edinburgh Patients

Edinburgh has cosmetic clinics, but surgeon-led hair transplant procedures carried out to the same standard are harder to find than people expect. The distinction matters. A hair transplant carried out primarily by technicians with a doctor nominally overseeing is a different proposition from one where the surgeon performs the extraction and implantation directly. The result you get reflects who does the work.

At our Glasgow clinic, our GMC-registered surgeons carry out the procedures themselves. That is the standard Edinburgh patients come to us for, and it is what we have built our reputation on across Scotland.

We offer FUE hair transplant, DHI hair transplant, and FUT hair transplant, as well as beard transplants and eyebrow transplants.

Why Edinburgh Patients Choose Our Glasgow Clinic

The journey time is one factor. An hour on the M8 or fifty minutes on the train from Haymarket means most Edinburgh patients are at the clinic before mid-morning if they leave at a reasonable time. That removes one of the main practical objections to travelling for a procedure.

The other factor is what is available at the destination. Edinburgh patients who have done their research find that surgeon-led expertise at this level is not something they can access locally without travelling anyway, often further and at greater cost. Our free consultation gives patients the chance to meet the surgical team, discuss their case in detail, and understand exactly what is involved before committing to anything.

For patients who prefer to combine the consultation and procedure into a single trip, we can arrange back-to-back appointments. Most Edinburgh patients find the short distance makes a separate consultation visit perfectly practical.

Procedures Available to Edinburgh Patients

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Individual follicles are extracted from the donor area using a fine precision punch tool, then placed into the recipient area. The donor site heals without a linear scar, which matters for patients who keep their hair short. FUE is the most commonly chosen technique and suits the majority of cases. Full detail on how the procedure works is on our FUE page.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

A variant of FUE that uses a specialised implanter pen to place grafts directly without pre-made channels in the recipient area. DHI is often preferred for patients adding density to an area where existing hair is still present. Our FUE vs DHI guide covers the practical differences between the two approaches.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant)

A strip of donor skin is removed from the back of the scalp, dissected into individual follicular units under magnification, and implanted into the recipient area. FUT leaves a linear scar in the donor area, which is covered by hair at a moderate length. It is the preferred option for patients who do not want to shave the donor area, including many women. Our FUT page covers who it suits and what recovery involves.

Beard and Eyebrow Transplants

We carry out beard transplants for men with patchy growth or scarring in the beard area, and eyebrow transplants for men and women who have lost brow density. Both procedures use FUE technique and follow the same recovery timeline as scalp transplants.

How Many Grafts Will I Need?

Graft requirements vary significantly depending on the extent of hair loss, the area being treated, and the density the patient wants to achieve. Hairline restoration for early to mid-stage recession typically requires 1,500 to 2,500 grafts. A procedure addressing the mid-scalp and crown as well can require 3,000 or more. Our guide to graft counts explains the typical ranges by pattern and area.

Pricing is set by graft count and is the same for all patients. The full breakdown is on our hair transplant cost page.

By car from Edinburgh

By train from Edinburgh

ScotRail services run frequently between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street, with a journey time of around 50 minutes. Edinburgh Haymarket also has direct services and is convenient if you are travelling from the west of Edinburgh. Glasgow Queen Street is a five-minute walk from the clinic. There are cosmetic clinics in Edinburgh, but surgeon-led hair transplant procedures carried out to a specialist standard are less available than patients often expect. Many Edinburgh patients who have researched the field find that travelling to Glasgow gives them access to a level of surgical expertise and experience that is not straightforwardly available locally. Given the journey is under an hour, the distance is not a significant barrier for most.

Yes. We offer a free consultation at the Glasgow clinic. Edinburgh patients can book this as a standalone visit before committing to anything. The consultation typically takes around an hour and covers the extent of your hair loss, the technique options, a realistic graft estimate, and expected outcome. If you prefer to combine the consultation and procedure into a single trip, we can arrange that too.

Most patients can travel home the same day of the procedure. The recipient area will be tender and there will be some redness and scabbing in the days that follow, but you are not restricted to bed rest. Travelling by train or car within a few hours of the procedure is fine for most patients. We advise avoiding driving immediately after if you have taken any sedative medication, which some patients opt for. The train from Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley takes under an hour and is a comfortable option.

FUE is the most common choice. It leaves no linear scar in the donor area, suits patients who keep their hair at short to medium lengths, and has a straightforward recovery profile. FUT is preferred for patients who do not want to shave the donor area. DHI suits patients looking to add density to an area where existing hair is still present. The right option depends on your individual case, which is what the consultation determines.

No. Pricing is based on the number of grafts required and is the same for all patients regardless of where they are travelling from. There are no additional charges for Edinburgh patients. The full pricing breakdown by graft count is on our cost page, and the free consultation will give you a precise graft estimate and a clear figure for your specific case.

Wow! Dr. Kalra is extremely thorough and enthusiastic about his work. As a patient, his professional manner put me at ease. He took time to design a natural hairline and even gave me his personal phone number to look after me following the procedure! The whole staff, including Kevin on the sales side made the patient experience fantastic. After two weeks, i was mostly healed and on my way. Thank you. Great team effort! 😃

I Had a hair transplant 10 days ago at HTG’s Edinburgh clinic and everything so far has been great. I had 1750 FUE grafts done which took approx. 7/8 hours and was carried out by Dr Kalra and his team who were very professional and did a brilliant job. There is zero pain after having this procedure and I’m looking forward to the next 12 months of strong growth! Kevin and Dr Kalra have both been excellent in providing support and answering any questions I have both before and after my procedure.

Kevin HTG, kept me informed of proceedings throughout the whole process leading up to my appointment and was very helpful in answering any questions I had. The transplant itself went very well, with Dr Kalra and his team talking me through the whole procedure as it progressed, and reassuring me if I had any concerns. Kevin, HTG plus Dr Kalra and his team were very professional throughout the whole process from the first phone call to completing the transplant.

One week on from having a FUE hair transplant, and I'm already delighted with how it is looking. My donor area is healing over nicely and my grafts are settling. Kevin promptly answered my initial inquiry and got me booked in for a day which suited me at the Edinburgh clinic. Dr Kalra wax my surgeon and within minutes of having met him, his experience and expertise was clear to see. The technicians and staff at the clinic were also very friendly and skilled. The only slight improvement I would have is that it would be good if patients were able to speak to their surgeon before their transplant day. I'd recommend HTG to anyone in central Scotland looking to have an FUE procedure done.
